Every Chesterfield venue has its own personality, and the styling that suits a converted barn won't suit a Georgian hotel ballroom. Here's how I approach the town's most-booked venues.

Derbyshire's barns are some of my favourite spaces to work in, and Chesterfield is spoilt for them. The mistake I see couples make is fighting the building with too much fuss. Let the timber beams, reclaimed stone, and big bifold doors lead, and work with the natural light spilling in. I'd run fairy light canopies and hanging foliage installations overhead, long banquet tables dressed with trailing eucalyptus and bud vases, and clusters of pillar candles in storm lanterns once the evening draws in. A muted palette — cream, sage, soft terracotta — sits beautifully against the wood and meadow views. Rustic, but never scruffy.

These venues come with their own grounds and a more polished setting, so the decor should feel elegant rather than themed. I usually recommend a statement ceremony arch in proportion to the room, tall pedestal arrangements framing the aisle, and table styling that's restrained but considered: white or ivory linen, charger plates, tapered candles, and low centrepieces that don't block your guests' view of each other. Garden roses, stocks, and seasonal greenery work well here. If the grounds are good, an outdoor ceremony with a free-standing floral arch against the gardens is worth every penny.

For heritage and town-centre venues like Staveley Hall and Chesterfield Town Hall

Historic interiors carry a lot of their own beauty, which means the decor needs to complement, not compete. Overloading the space with florals fights the architecture every time. I lean towards a few well-placed pieces: a single floral installation, elegant aisle markers, and compact tablescapes with tapered candles and crisp linen. Heritage venues also tend to have firm rules around open flame and wall fixings, so we'll plan around those early. Less, done beautifully, always wins in a room like this.

For Peak District and outdoor settings

Chesterfield's biggest advantage is the countryside on its doorstep, and plenty of venues lean into it with outdoor ceremonies and marquee receptions. When the landscape is doing the heavy lifting, your decor should frame it, not bury it. Wildflower-style arrangements, trailing greenery, and natural textures like jute, linen, and unpolished wood feel right against the meadows. Free-standing floral arches and aisle markers in soft, garden-grown palettes photograph beautifully here, and I'd always have a wet-weather plan ready — it's Derbyshire, after all.
