Every Manchester venue has its own personality, and the decor that suits a converted cotton warehouse won't suit a neo-Gothic nave. Here's how I approach styling across the city's most-booked venue types.

For industrial and warehouse venues like Ducie Street Warehouse and the Castlefield Rooms

Manchester's warehouse spaces are some of the most fun rooms in the country to style, because the building does half the work for you. The mistake I see couples make is fighting the brick with heavy, formal decor. The opposite works better. Let the exposed brick, original beams, and steelwork lead, then soften the hard edges with greenery, warm candlelight, and low-hanging installations. Trailing eucalyptus down long sharing tables, clusters of amber-glass votives, and a single floral or foliage cloud above the top table can transform these spaces without smothering them. A palette of terracotta, rust, or dusty pink sits beautifully against red brick. Warm, not ornate.

For heritage venues like The Monastery and Victoria Baths

Grade II* listed venues like The Monastery in Gorton and the Edwardian halls at Victoria Baths come with serious architectural drama built in. The decor's job is to frame it, not compete with it. Overcrowding a 100-foot nave or a tiled pool hall with florals never works. I usually recommend a statement ceremony installation that echoes the room's proportions, tall pedestal arrangements to draw the eye upward, and restrained table styling: crisp linen, charger plates, tapered candles, and compact centrepieces your guests can see over. Heritage venues almost always have rules around open flame and fixings, so we'll plan around those early. Less, done beautifully, always wins in a room like this.

Manchester's flexible spaces give you the most freedom, and therefore need the most thought. Think the gallery beneath the dome at The Portico, converted Northern Quarter studios, or the cultural rooms at the Museum of Science and Industry. When the room isn't telling you what to do, your colour palette and florals have to lead. Hanging floral installations, neon signage, and bold colour-block tablescapes work brilliantly here. This is where more adventurous couples can lean into a proper theme (disco, monochrome, Mediterranean) without clashing with the building's own character.

For country houses and boutique townhouses on the fringe

Out towards Cheshire and the leafier suburbs, venues like Colshaw Hall and boutique Victorian townhouses such as Eleven Didsbury Park call for a softer, more traditional register. These spaces lean romantic, with private gardens, panelled rooms, and walled courtyards that practically ask for a country garden theme. Abundant greenery, garden roses, sweet peas in season, mantelpiece installations, and aisle markers running out into the grounds work beautifully. Natural palettes of cream, sage, blush, and soft lavender feel right here. If you've got garden access for the ceremony, a free-standing floral arch against the landscape is one of the most photographed setups I do.
